Sadly, Serena’s parents—indeed, most parents nowadays—are victims of our culture. With nearly four million new babies born every year, the furnishings of babyhood have spawned entire industries. Billions of dollars are spent annually convincing us we must create a proper “environment” for our babies, and parents buy into the idea big time. They think that if they’re not constantly entertaining their baby, they’re somehow failing her, because she’s not getting enough “intellectual stimulation.” And if, by some miracle, they don’t pressure themselves, one of their friends will: “You mean you didn’t get Serena the baby bouncer for the doorway?” Mae and Wendell’s friends will ask accusingly, as if their daughter would grow up deprived without one. That’s pure codswallop!
